Gulab Jamun

 Description

Gulab Jamun is a popular Pakistani dessert with deep-fried dumplings soaked in sweet and fragrant syrup. The dumplings are made from milk solids and flour, and the syrup is flavored with rosewater and cardamom.

Ingredients
  • For the dumplings:
    • 1 cup milk powder
    • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 cup ghee or oil
    • 1/2 cup lukewarm milk
  • For the syrup:
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 cup water
    • 1/4 cup rosewater
    • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
    • Crushed pistachio for garnish
Method
  1. Make the dumplings: Combine the milk powder, flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl. Add the ghee or oil and mix until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Gradually add the milk and knead until a smooth dough forms. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Shape the dumplings: Divide the dough into small balls, about the size of a small lemon.
  3. Fry the dumplings: Heat enough oil in a deep frying pan to deep-fry the dumplings. Add the dumplings and fry until golden brown when the oil is hot. Drain and set aside.
  4. Make the syrup: Combine the sugar, water, rosewater, and cardamom powder in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Soak the dumplings: Add the fried dumplings to the warm syrup and let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Serve: Serve the Gulab Jamun warm or at room temperature, garnished with crushed pistachio.
